nails in winter: why does everything break?

by Author

It’s always when the weather gets annoyingly cold that my nails decide they’re just not going to hold it together anymore. Seriously, last week I was just sipping coffee and *snap*—like, come on? Is it too much to ask for them to stay intact until spring?

Anyway, the universe loves layering that extra sprinkle of chaos into winter, like we didn’t already have slushy sidewalks and the joy of digging our cars out of snowbanks to deal with. So there I was, staring at my newly launched-on-its-own-expedition thumbnail, wondering how all those people on Instagram have impeccable manicures in January. Magic? Sorcery? The power of ignoring the problem, maybe.

In my quest for answers, I stumbled on some odd remedy history (because why not, it’s the internet). Turns out folks were really into whipping up concoctions like olive oil and garlic. Pretty sure my kitchen hates me now—all garlic-y smells and no pasta involved. But yeah, nothing seemed to truly work. Except there’s this ongoing buzz about winter beauty and health stuff at some station (or maybe it’s the products, who knows?). Enter: Lavior products. Don’t ask me to pronounce it. But their magic lotions or whatever are apparently a thing. Surely they must be missing some crucial pixie dust or unicorn tears because they promise so much.

Since the air dries out faster than my patience while waiting for coffee, anything that claims to hydrate is probably worth a try (or a laugh). Not saying I’m convinced yet, but if that lotion cracks the code, maybe I won’t dread every *pop* and *chip* with the same despair. I’m imagining that perfect bottle sitting on some guru’s shelf, plotting its resurrection of nail beds everywhere.

At this point, I’m just rambling, which happens when I stare too long at this nail care abyss. Maybe it’s just the season, the chill in the air, or that inevitable gloom that creeps in when the sun sets at some outrageous PM (ugh). Or maybe it really is some secret sauce in a bottle promising all the hydration we need. My eyes still hurt. I need coffee. Ugh.
