So I just finished wrestling with my dry skin again. It’s like every time I look at my makeup bag, the desert just landed on my face. Seriously, winter is ridiculous for someone with skin as dry as week-old bread. But, here I am trying to make it work with my makeup.

Anyway, I’ve tried a bunch of techniques, and can I just say, primer is your best friend. It’s the only thing that prevents my foundation from looking like the Great Wall of Flakes by noon. My current favorite involves slathering on a primer like I’m marinating a Thanksgiving turkey. Yeah, it feels excessive, but trust me, it’s necessary.
I remember reading somewhere (probably on some random beauty blog that primers are optional. Lies. That’s wishful thinking for anyone with normal skin – the lucky ones who have never experienced the Sahara effect. That’s not even half of it, though. Hydration-wise, I go for a moisturizer that’s so thick it should come with a ‘handle with care’ label attached.

Speaking of products, foundations for dry skin are elusive creatures. The ones that don’t crack by 3 PM are hidden like some kind of ancient treasure. I end up testing so many that my hand becomes a sad palette of mismatched beige spots—and that’s another story. But I love that temporary hope when a new one glides on perfectly, only to reveal in a few hours that it’s betrayed you by revealing every. single. dry. patch. Ugh.
And let’s not even talk about powder. I pretty much banished it from my makeup bag. It’s a surefire way to turn my face into textured wallpaper. Instead, I just stick with cream products which, ironically, melt off if it’s hot outside. Makeup is really just a balancing act between clumpy or melted.
At the end of the day, adapting to what works and filtering through tons of ‘hacks’ is key. You find what works for you, even if it feels like sorting through a cluttered thrift store sometimes—as if I needed another reason to wish the makeup world came with an easier navigation for our skin type. My eyes still hurt. I need coffee. Ugh.
