when did night creams become the underworld of skincare?

I just had another one of those moments where you stumble across something so bizarre you have to take a step back and wonder how we’ve gotten here. So, skin whitening night creams, huh? Apparently, they’re the new ‘it’ thing in the underworld of skincare (I was today years old when I learned this).

Picture this: A whole aisle in your local beauty store dedicated to jars and tubes promising you a ‘Vera level result tharum’ (don’t even get me started on what ‘Vera level’ means to them). But honestly, it begs the question, why are people so obsessed with changing their skin tone overnight? Like, midnight transformations; do people think they’re real-life Cinderellas?

Let’s dissect this beautiful pandemonium further. These creams are mostly applied just as you’re ready to crash for the night, textbook face-off with the pillow, wrapped in your most luxurious pajamas (or, let’s be real, the oldest t-shirt you own) and then BAM, supposed magical transformation happens while you dream. Science or hocus pocus?

I’ve read some eye-opening stories about people swearing by their skin getting extra snowy while they drool on their pillows, but sorry, I’m not convinced. It’s less about the fairy-tale promises and more – is it reasonable to expect every skin issue to go away with a single night slather?

I get it; the world of beauty is vast and sometimes baffling. But when social media and product labels mix languages to sell ‘Vera level’ dreams (some pseudo magical benchmark only known to marketing teams, probably), it just gets too wild to follow.

Anyway, whether these creams work or not, one thing is certain: my eyes definitely need shielding from exaggerated marketing claims. Ugh, where’s my coffee?
