Beauty Photography: The Unlikely Alliance of AI and Makeup π¨
Imagine this: you’re a photographer in the fast-paced world of fashion and beauty, and you’re pondering the classic existential crisis β Is AI a friend or foe? Will it lead to our collective annihilation or usher in an era of unparalleled creativity? Letβs be honest, we don’t really have a crystal ball here, but I have a feeling even if AI takes over, theyβll still need artists to tell those photo-taking robots which buttons to push. And so, in the spirit of collaboration (or appeasement), I decided to embrace our digital overlords and use them as a font of inspiration for beauty photography.
This is where the magic happens, folks. I called upon the ultra-talented makeup artist Marika D’Auteuil, a sorceress of sorts who conjures up digital enchantments inspired by AI, and together we dabbled in what some might call Photoalchemy β creating beauty looks that exist simultaneously in the human and digital realms. Because if AI is going to rule us all, I might as well make sure we’re immortalized in Vogue first. π€π
The Muse of Artificial Insight
Marika, who runs the Instagram account @illusorybeauty, has been forging new paths in the fashion world using AI-generated inspirations. With a collection that has already turned industry heads and landed her editorial gigs for top brands, she’s just the person you want advising you on how to blend human creativity with machine learning.
In our recent collaboration, Marika and I used her digital mock-ups as blueprints, adapting them with our personal flair to create a series of jaw-dropping aesthetic photos. Here’s what went down:
- Mood Board Madness: We built a thematic mood board from AI references, making sure each pixel of inspiration matched our real-world muse.
- Makeup Metamorphosis: AI led the way in developing the look, proving once again that sometimes machines might just understand the human face better than we do.
- Lighting Wizardry: Utilizing the Canon R5 and Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM, I crafted a lighting setup worthy of an epic battle scene from a sci-fi film:
- Main Light: The 3ft octabox transformed into a beauty shaman, casting serene Rembrandt lighting across the face. Look closely and you’ll see the magical light triangle beneath the eyes.
- Fill Lights: Balanced turntables of colored light danced around the model using a bare-headed blue gel on the right and a magenta-lit 10-degree grid on the left.
- Shutter Drag Reality: My long exposure gave the image its signature light streaks β like the Northern Lights decided to cameo in our photo shoot.
So, the verdict: is AI a friend or a foe? At this moment, it’s a quirky collaborator that loves futuristic eyeliner, and I’m totally fine with that. Embrace the pixelated love and keep your eyes peeled for the next phase of digital artistry… unless you really wanted the robots to rebel. π
